This painting was birthed out of Luke 22:44 —

“And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood.”

Reading this verse, I was awestruck by the visual and knew I had to capture it. I immediately began sketching what I saw in my mind—Jesus immersed in an olive grove, hanging from a tree—the picture in his mind that made him anguish. The foreground was to be covered in blood red poppies, reflecting both beauty and pain. Poppies grow in the Garden of Gethsemane each spring, which is something I discovered after choosing the flower to be the centerpiece. They’re even referred to as “drops of blood” for their significance.

Currently on view at Nexus Coffee and Creative in Little Rock, AR through September 2025.
